ARCHBISHOP SEÁN BRADY STATEMENT ON THE DEATH TODAY

OF FORMER TAOISEACH MR CHARLES J HAUGHEY

I wish to extend my deepest condolences to the family of Mr Charles J Haughey. Mr Haughey
was an able and talented politician who did much to promote the interests of Ireland and
her people.

As a cabinet minister and Taoiseach he was a reforming politician and he had considerable
success in introducing measures to take care of the less well off and disadvantaged in our
society. Mr Haughey will also be remembered for pioneering public utility allowance schemes
and free transport for the elderly.

As Taoiseach, he played a significant part in initiating good relations with Britain as a
key factor in resolving the political problems of Northern Ireland.

We remember in our prayers today his wife Máirín, daughter Eimear, his sons Conor, Ciaran
and Seán, his brother Fr Eoghan Haughey OMI and his wider family.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
