How do I get more followers on social media?
The answer is if you build it, they will come! [Thanks to Field of Dreams for that quote]
Managing parish and diocesan social media is not like building a house or writing a book. You put all the effort and energy into the build or the writing and then you can sit back and admire the work. You certainly do have to put a lot of effort and energy into building a social media account but you never get to sit back and admire the page when it’s done. That’s when your work really begins.
You build followers in four ways. With Content, Conversation, Cross-pollination and Creativity.
What sort of materials are you sharing on your social media? Is you content frequent or ad hoc? Are you broadcasting one way or having a conversation about faith and parish? Are you sharing other faith stories into your timeline and Twitter streams? Are you Retweeting and Sharing relevant content from other Church sources?
Finally, how creative are you being with telling the story of your parish or diocese? Whilst routine and factual information is important in the age of fake news, sharing carefully curated creative content is what wins people over onto your page and streams and what makes them stay.
It’s also important never to lose sight of the faith aspect of your accounts!
