Statement by Bishop Denis Nulty paying tribute to the late Bishop Liam MacDaid RIP

17 Aug 2023

It was with great sadness I learned of the death of Bishop Liam MacDaid.

Bishop Liam served from 2013 to 2016 as chair of the Council for Marriage & the Family of the Irish Bishops’ Conference, which I now chair.  During that time, in 2015, Bishop Liam was present at the eighth World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia when it was announced that the next gathering, its ninth meeting, would take place here in 2018.  It is interesting that later this month we will mark the fifth anniversary of the Irish Church hosting the World Meeting of Families.

Bishop Liam had enormous pastoral interest in marriage and the family, having attended the earlier World Meeting of Families in Milan in 2012.  In the years between the Philadelphia and Dublin World Meetings of Families, Bishop Liam was involved in many initiatives raising the profile of the family.  One event I particularly recall was a conference hosted by the Council for Marriage & Family in Clonliffe College, Dublin, where Bishop Liam very successfully introduced drama to act out contemporary family situations.  It showed the vision and ability of Bishop Liam.

May Bishop Liam be richly rewarded for the great service he has given marriage and the family, and well as to those who have worked alongside him over those years.  Bishop Liam’s kindness and warmth will be greatly missed.  May his gentle soul rest in peace.
