PRESS RELEASE
12 August 2011
Cardinal Seán Brady pays tribute to the late James Kelly RIP
James Kelly was a man of integrity, a journalist of the highest standards and a fair and balanced observer of the world around him.
The life of James Kelly coincided with a momentous century in Irish history and for most of those hundred years he reported on events in an accurate and impartial manner, sometimes in the face of political opposition.
Jimmy’s experiences as a journalist gave him a unique insight into Irish society which qualified him, in later life, as the most informed commentator in Ireland. The James Kelly weekly column in ‘The Irish News’ was written with insight, a strong sense of social justice and a degree of sparkling humour which few could match.
Jimmy was a devout Catholic whose faith gave him a framework within which he would view the rapidly changing world. His personal morality was reflected in the professionalism of his work and in the way he treated everyone, whatever their politics or religion, with respect, decency and dignity.
I express my deep sympathy to Jimmy’s family, his relatives and his many close friends on their loss. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
Cardinal Seán Brady
Archbishop of Armagh
