Statement by Bishop Edward Daly, Bishop Emeritus of Derry on the resignation of Bishop Séamus Hegarty

I am shocked by the news that my successor Bishop Séamus Hegarty has submitted to the Holy Father his letter of resignation as Bishop of Derry. I was aware that he had been in indifferent health for some time. I am conscious of the huge and demanding burden of responsibility that a bishop has to accept.  Bishop Hegarty was prudent and wise to submit his resignation if he did not feel able any longer to continue in his episcopal responsibility.

I wish to thank Bishop Séamus for his ministry in this diocese for the last 17 years.  On a personal note, I thank him for his unfailing kindness to me and constant care for me during those years. I have been speaking to him earlier today and assured him of my good wishes and prayers in the years to come.
