Church Ceremonies for National Day of Mourning

13 September 2001

The Catholic Communications Office has set up a special webpage to provide information on Diocesan Church Ceremonies scheduled for the National Day of Mourning. The webpage, which was launched at lunchtime today, is available at www.catholiccommunications.ie/news and will be updated regularly as additional information becomes available.

Details of some of the ceremonies taking place in Dioceses around the country follows:

Armagh
Most Reverend Seán Brady, Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland, will be Principal Celebrant at a special Mass to mark the National Day of Mourning in St. Malachy’s Church, Irish Street, Armagh at 7.30pm on Friday 14 September 2001.

Clogher
On Friday 14 September, Mass will be celebrated by Most Reverend Joseph Duffy, Bishop of Clogher in St. Macartan’s Cathedral, Monaghan at 12.00 noon to remember those who lost their lives and to pray for those injured and bereaved.

Cork and Ross

At 10.30am on Friday 14 September an Ecumenical Service will take place in St. Fin Barre’s Cathedral in Cork, which will be attended by Most Rev John Buckley, Bishop of Cork and Ross and The Right Reverend Paul Colton Bishop of Cork, Cloyne and Ross.

Following the service in St Fin Barre’s a Mass will be held in St Francis Church, Liberty Street, Cork which will be attended by Bishop John Buckley and Bishop Paul Colton.

Down and Connor
The Bishop of Down and Connor, Dr Patrick Walsh, will celebrate Mass in St. Peter’s Cathedral, Belfast on Sunday, 16September at 11.30am for those who have been killed or injured in the tragedy in America.

Monsignor Tom Toner the Administrator of the Cathedral will join with Dean Houston McKelvey in leading a prayer service in St. Anne’s Cathedral on Saturday at 1.00pm.

Dublin
A Vigil of Prayer for Remembrance and Reconciliation will take place in the Pro-Cathedral on Thursday 13 September, at 8 p.m. This service of prayer and music is offered to young people in particular, many of whom have experience of travelling to the US for summer work and holidays or may have friends there now.

Her Excellency President Mary McAleese and An Taoiseach, Mr Bertie Ahern, will both be present at an Ecumenical Service of Remembrance at the Pro-Cathedral tomorrow morning, Friday, at 10.45 am. Three minutes silence will be observed at 11 am.

Cardinal Connell will celebrate Mass in the Pro-Cathedral on Sunday, 16 September at 12.30 pm to remember the victims of the terrorist attacks. The President, Mrs McAleese and the Taoiseach, Mr Ahern, are attending.

Galway
At 12 noon on Friday 14 September 2001 a Civic Mass will be held in the Cathedral of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven and St Nicholas, Galway. The Most Reverend James Mc Loughlin,Bishop of Galway will be Principal Celebrant at the Mass which will be attended by the Mayor and the Borough Council.

Limerick
A special Mass will be celebrated by Most Reverend Donal Murray, Bishop of Limerick, in St John’s Cathedral, Limerick, tomorrow, Friday 14 September, at 12 midday.
