Validation Process Welcomed

The Child Protection Office (CPO) of the Irish Bishops’ Conference welcomes a provision by the Minister for Education and Science to include a validation process in the Residential Institutions Redress Bill. This is a central and crucial issue, which is of immense importance to many of the parties involved. In a submission to the Minister, the CPO stressed the need to ensure that the redress process be fair to all the parties involved.

The CPO also welcomes the proposed extension of the provisions of the Redress Scheme to include additional institutions – not included originally.

In our submission to the Minister we stressed the need for this scheme to ensure justice for all and the avoidance of a two tier system. We trust the Minister will find a way of dealing with other victims of abuse who resided in or attended institutions which are still outside the remit of the scheme.
