Background:
Emerging from a conference organised by the ICJSA on the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church on the theme of ‘The Common Good in an Unequal World’, which took place on 2 March 2006, this publication reflects on the various components of the Compendium and analyses its message for and relation to today’s society from theological and philosophical perspectives, from the place of faith and politics, solidarity and freedom, and rights and responsibilities. The Common Good in an Unequal World includes papers by: An Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern; former Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland, Ms Nuala O’Loan; and, former Governor of Hong Kong, Lord Chris Patten. It also presents papers from Archbishop Diarmuid Martin, Archbishop of Dublin; Sr Joan Roddy, Co-ordinator of the Irish Bishops’ Refugee Project; and, Mr David Begg, General Secretary of ICTU.

- About the ICJSA
- The ICJSA is a Commission of the Irish Episcopal Conference and is a member of its Department of Social Issues and International Affairs. The Commission deals specifically with the areas of justice and social affairs. The purpose of ICJSA is to ensure the perspective of the Irish Bishops, drawing on Catholic Social Teaching, is represented in public debates on key justice and social issues.
