PRESS RELEASE

Cardinal Brady calls for prayers and support for the Polish community
Cardinal Seán Brady, Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland, said “I express my deepest sympathies to the people of Poland who, with heavy hearts, are mourning the loss of 97 compatriots including the President of Poland Mr Lech Kaczynski and his wife Maria, who died in a plane crash today in Russia. The suddenness and scale of this loss of life is profoundly upsetting. On this eve of Divine Mercy Sunday, which is of particular significance to Poles everywhere, I ask the faithful to unite in prayer at Masses tomorrow for those who have died and for their loved ones. At this time of immense human loss I encourage everyone, through prayer and friendship, to express solidarity with our Polish community in parishes, schools and workplaces.”

Notes to editors:
- ‘Divine Mercy Sunday’ was established by the late Pope John Paul II during the Jubilee Year 2000. The theme of the ‘Divine Mercy of Jesus’ was promoted by the Polish Saint and visionary, Sister Faustina Kowalska, from John Paul’s home city of Krakow, whom he canonised on Sunday 30 April 2000.
- Divine Mercy Sunday points to us the wounds of Jesus’ Passion, especially the wound in His heart, the source of a great wave of mercy and love poured out on humanity.
