Statement from Bishop Alphonsus Cullinan regarding the death of a young boy in Dunmore East

09 Feb 2024

It is with deep sorrow and profound sadness that we, the people of God, in the Catholic Diocese of Waterford and Lismore, received the tragic news of the death of a young boy in  Dunmore East.  Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones of the young child during this incredibly difficult time.

The tightknit community in Dunmore East will be devastated by this heartbreaking loss.  The death of a child is an unimaginable tragedy, and our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this deeply tragic loss.  We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the young boy as they navigate through this time of immense grief and sorrow.

In times of such profound loss, it is important for us to come together in solidarity, compassion, and support for one another.  We urge the community to offer their support to those who are grieving and to uphold them in their time of need.

We also express our gratitude to the emergency services and authorities involved in responding to this tragic incident.  Their professionalism and dedication in handling such distressing situations are commendable.

As a faith community, we will hold the family of the young boy in our prayers, seeking comfort and solace for them during this incredibly challenging period.  We ask for privacy and respect for the family as they come to terms with their devastating loss.

In times of sorrow and grief, we are reminded of the words of Jesus in the Gospel of John (14:27), “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you.  Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.”

As we mourn the loss of this innocent child, let us also remember that Jesus is the Great Redeemer, who can heal even the deepest wounds.  Through our faith and prayer, we can find strength and hope in these trying times.

I encourage everyone  to participate in Masses and prayers for the repose of the soul of the young boy and for the consolation of his family.  Let us unite in prayer, asking for God’s mercy and comfort during this time of unimaginable pain.
